Rauwolfia Serpentina (Benth ex Kurz): A Versatile Medicinal Plant
Family: Apocynaceae
Common Names: Snake Root (English), Sarpagandha (Sanskrit)
Origin: Indigenous to India
Rauwolfia serpentina, also known as snake root or sarpagandha, has been a part of Indian medicine for over 4000 years, as referenced in Charaka’s work. Traditionally, the roots of this plant have been valued in India and the Malayan Peninsula for their medicinal properties, particularly as an antidote for poisonous bites from reptiles and insects. The plant thrives in waste places and shady forests throughout India, with both its leaves and roots being used for medicinal purposes.
Medicinal Uses
High Blood Pressure
Rauwolfia is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating hypertension and has been adopted by the medical community worldwide.
Dosage: Half a teaspoon of the root powder taken three times a day can help relieve hypertension. In homeopathic medicine, a tincture (10 drops) taken three times a day is also effective.
Active Ingredients: The primary active compound, reserpine, is responsible for the plant’s anti-hypertensive and tranquilizing properties. Other alkaloids such as ajmalicine, deserpidine, rescinnamine, and sepentine exhibit similar effects but with reduced potency. Ajmaline, combined with other hypotensive agents, is used to treat hypertension complicated by arrhythmia.
Insanity
Rauwolfia can be beneficial in treating insanity, particularly in highly irritable patients with strong physiques.
Dosage: One gram of powdered root taken twice a day with goat’s milk sweetened with sugar candy.
Note: It is not suitable for lean, weak, or melancholic patients unless they have abnormally high blood pressure. It should not be used by individuals with low blood pressure.
Hysteria
Rauwolfia is highly effective in treating hysteria.
Dosage: One gram of powdered root taken three times a day with milk. The treatment should continue until complete recovery is achieved.
Itching and Urticaria
Rauwolfia can relieve itching caused by urticaria.
Dosage: One gram of powdered root taken with water.
Other Uses
Digestive System
Rauwolfia acts as an appetizer, digestive aid, cholagogue, and anthelmintic.
Applications: It is used to treat loss of appetite and helminthiasis. For abdominal pain, a mixture of one part rauwolfia root, two parts bark of kutaja, and three parts roots of castor taken with milk is recommended.
Reproductive System
Rauwolfia can influence reproductive health by reducing libido and increasing menstrual bleeding.
Applications: It is used to treat priapism (painful erection) and excessive libido. It also alleviates the pain of dysmenorrhea and can be used to enhance uterine contractions during labor.
Summary
Rauwolfia serpentina is a potent medicinal plant with a wide range of applications, from managing high blood pressure and treating hysteria to aiding digestion and addressing reproductive health issues. It is a valuable addition to both traditional and modern medical practices.
