Treating Laryngitis in Children: Know the Various Treatment Options
Laryngitis in children is an inflammation of the voice box (larynx) that can result in hoarseness or loss of voice. It’s usually caused by viral infections and typically resolves on its own within a week or two. However, there are several options to help manage the symptoms and provide comfort to children with laryngitis:
Resting the Voice
Encourage your child to rest their voice as much as possible. Whispering can strain the vocal cords even more, so it’s best to avoid it.
Hydration
Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids, especially water. Hydration helps keep the throat moist and can soothe irritation.
Humidification
Use a humidifier in your child’s room to add moisture to the air. This can help prevent further drying of the vocal cords and soothe the throat.
Steam Inhalation
Steam inhalation from a bowl of warm water can help provide relief to the irritated vocal cords. Make sure the steam is not too hot and supervise your child during the process.
Warm Saltwater Gargle
For older children who can gargle, a warm saltwater gargle can provide temporary relief from discomfort. Make sure your child does not swallow the saltwater.
Avoid Irritants
Keep your child away from smoke and other irritants that can worsen laryngitis symptoms.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relief
For discomfort or mild pain, you can use children’s acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed by a healthcare professional.
Avoid Coughing or Throat Clearing
Encourage your child to avoid frequent coughing or throat clearing, as this can further irritate the vocal cords.
Honey (for children over 1 year old)
Honey can be soothing for the throat. You can give your child a spoonful of honey, or mix it with warm water or herbal tea. Do not give honey to children under 1 year old due to the risk of infant botulism.
Time and Patience
Most cases of viral laryngitis will resolve on their own with time. Providing comfort measures and patience is often the best course of action.
Homeopathy
This form of alternative treatment is popular for treating children as it is considered safe and natural. Homeopathy works on the principle “similia similibus curentur” and uses phytomedicines (plant derivatives), minerals, and biological extracts from tissues to treat patients while mapping their profile and symptoms. It has been clinically validated and is adopted in a large number of countries.
It’s important to consult a pediatrician or healthcare professional if your child’s symptoms are severe, worsen, or do not improve after a few days. Additionally, if your child has difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, or appears very ill, seek medical attention immediately, as these could be signs of a more serious condition.
Note:
Avoid giving your child over-the-counter cough or cold medications without consulting a healthcare provider, especially in younger children, as these medications are not recommended due to potential risks and limited efficacy. Always follow the guidance of a healthcare professional for treating laryngitis or any other health concern in children.
