Dandruff: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Dandruff is a clinical condition caused by speeding up of the normal shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. Technically it is a cluster of corneocytes bound tightly bound when they detach from the surface of the stratum corneum . The dead skin accumulates as white flakes in the hair and causes itching and is the most common condition, affecting half of the population at the pre-pubertal age. The word dandruff (dandruff, dandriffe) has a Anglo-Saxon origin, ‘tan’ meaning ‘tetter’ and ‘drof’ meaning ‘dirty’ . Epidermal cells (also called keratinocytes) of the scalp play a key role in triggering immunological reactions during dandruff formation. The extent of scaling is about 487,000cells/sq cm of the scalp when subjected to detergents and this number goes upto 800,000/sq cm during seborrhoeic dermatitis
Why do you get dandruff?
Etiopathologic pathways with complex mechanisms influenced by internal and external factors lead to dandruff formation. A tiny fungus, the yeast Pityrosporum ovale that grows in the scalp triggers it . Another possible cause may be overactive oil glands on the scalp due to the clogging of the pores on the scalp. These clogged pores lead to flaking of the skin. The cause can be either internal or external.
The internal cause may be due to hormonal imbalances, stress, poor health, poor hygiene, allergy improper nutrition, and excess consumption of consumption of sugar, fat or starch
While external causes include excessive use of hair sprays and gel, improper shampooing, improper use of hair colouring products and hair drier, cold weather and excessive exposure to sun (known to cause desquamation of the scalp).
Dandruff Symptoms
Clinical features : Itching of scalp, profuse scales and flakes formed in scalp and these flakes peel off from the scalp and are glued in the hair. Itchy flakes that appears on scalp or eyebrows or around the hair line, ears or nose. Scales may be small and white or large, greasy and yellow. Sometimes pimples on face are associated with dandruff.
Outward Manifestations: The hair becomes coarse and turn sticky at the roots, Hair appears laden with snowfall or chalk powder. If left untreated hair starts falling and scalp itchiness starts in. Many times flakes appear on the eyebrows, eyelashes, shoulders and clothes. In case it becomes excessive, small flakes accumulateat the root of hairs and cause itchiness.
Home remedies for dandruff treatment
- While washing hair, apply fresh lime juice, as it removes stickiness and dandruff.
- Sour curd (yogurt) applied on the scalp and washed after 30 minutes, it will help to do away with dandruff.
- Wash hair with Neem leaves in boiling water or weak salt water to check hair fall and dandruff.
- Mix 8 tbsp. of groundnut oil with lemon juice and rub the mixture on the scalp, leave for half an hour and then wash as usual.

Dandruff treated with Homeopathy : Doctor Case Study
A 35 yrs old female patient presented with severe itching and falling of flakes from scalp since 5 yrs. Itching scalp associated with hair fall and small skin eruption. Hair was glued with flakes by discharge from eruptions. Appearance of scalp was dry, unhealthy, and awkward. She is a house maid and exposure to dust is very common. Patient is mild, sensitive, anger easily. Patient is hot, thirsty, desire sweets, aversion to fish, skin is dry and less perspires.
Diagnosis: Dandruff
Case totality: Dandruff with white scales, skin eruptions. Patient is hot, thirsty, desire sweets, aversion to fish, dry skin Probable drugs are Sulphur, Natrum mur, Sepia, Thuja, Bacillinum, Sanicula.
Rx: Sulphur 10M 1 dose, SL for 1 month. Skin eruptions relieved first then followed by dandruff scales cleared and hair fall stopped in 6 months. No other medicine prescribed in between. Adviced the patient to keep scalp healthy. Dandruff patients should not share combs of others. They should not use same towel in consecutive head bath without washing.
