About Belladonna
Common Name of Source: Deadly Nightshade
Keynotes: Sudden Heat/Fever Symptoms, Throbbing Headaches, Flaring Tempers; Colds, Flu, Ear Pain and other symptoms with redness or fever.
Description: When fever, throbbing bursting headache or sunshine, flaring temper symptoms cause glowing red cheeks and restlessness, Belladonna comes to the fore with its soothing effect (cool). Another keynote is suddenness. Bella’s symptoms flare up fast with throbbing, chills and hot dryness, such as hot dry throats, dry cough, dry skin, eye irritation, red gums with teething and menopausal hot flashes. The last key is restlessness— restless sleep, overall restlessness and even a restless desire to escape when you match the whole picture.
Modalities: Worse for touch, jarring, noise, cold drafts, after noon, lying down. Better, not much in this department, but lying with head and shoulders up in a dark quiet room can help.
Leading characteristics of Belladonna
- Ailments with rush of blood to head and face.
- Violent Delirium: Disposition to bite, spit, strike and tear things; breaks into fits of laughter and gnashes the teeth; wants to bite and strike the attendants; tries to escape.
- Hallucinations: Sees ghosts, hideous faces and various insects; black animals, dogs, wolves; fears imaginary things, wants to run away from them. Delusions horrible. Convulsions come on suddenly; with high fever; during teething; with hot head and cold feet.
- Pains: Come suddenly, last indefinitely and cease suddenly; renal colic.
- Headache: Congestive, with red face, throbbing of brain and carotids (neck arteries), worse from slight noise, jar, motion, light, lying down, least exertion; better from pressure, tight bandaging (Arg. Nit.), wrapping up, during menses.
- Vertigo: When stooping; when rising after stooping; on every change of position (Bry.).
- Tonsillitis after riding in a cold wind.
- Appendicitis: Pain in right ileo-caecal (right lower half of abdomen) region; aggravated by slightest touch, even of the bed-cover.
- Scarlet Fever: Rash of a uniform, smooth, shining, scarlet redness.
- Prolapse of Uterus: Sensation as if the contents of abdomen would issue through the vulva; better from standing and sitting erect; worse from lying down.
- Especially adapted to the persons:
- who are lively and entertaining when well, but violent and often delirious when sick;
- who are plethoric, vigorous and intellectual;
- chilly persons: great proneness to take cold; sensitive to draught of air, especially when uncovering the head;
- who have reactive excitability; reaction to medicine is so quick and so sudden that they at once feel relieved;
- who are hypersensitive to touch, motion, jar, light and noise, extremes of heat and cold; they are worse from lying down, at night, after midnight, after 3 p.m., looking at bright, shining objects, uncovering the head;
- who feel better by rest, standing or sitting erect; in a warm room;
- who are of tuberculous disposition.

Belladonna Side Effects & Precautions
Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur. Depending on your constitution few side effects could occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects will most likely go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.
Belladonna is likely unsafe when taken by mouth directly. It contains chemicals that can be toxic. Side effects can include constipation, decreased sweating, dizziness, dry mouth, nose, throat, or skin.
Do not take this medicine within 1 hour of taking antacids or medicine for diarrhea. Taking them too close together will make the belladonna alkaloids less effective.
